Some ground is just bad. Ain’t nothing you can do ‘cept leave well alone. But the council insisted on pavin’ it over then scritching their heads when cracks reappeared. Ain’t no listening done in them offices.
Problem is, too much listening got done by that little girl. Dashin’ here and there on her way to school, she heard the voices from below. Her mama always told her don’t you dare step on no cracks, ‘cept those whispers didn’t mention breaking no backs.
So Jane stamped right on a crack… but it weren’t no voices what stepped out to meet her.
